After returning back to the palace, the King will have a long meeting with the ministers in his study. Gabrielle will inform you that the meeting was about the country’s finances, but she won’t know the details about it. You’ll be determined to find out more.
Gabrielle will point out how much you’ve changed ever since that gambling session. She’ll notice you’re almost a completely different person now. Unfortunately, you won’t really know how to reply to her, so you’ll simply say you want the best for the people of France.
Your friend will smile at you and say she’ll be there for you should you need anything. You’ll ask her to help you look for some books on French history and books on taxes. She’ll nod and agree to help you without hesitation.
After reading and researching for a few days, you will have a much better understanding of the royal court’s current situation. Needless to say, the situation is quite dire, and any misstep could have disastrous consequences. Not long after you’re done with the research, Madam Deniau will inform you that the King wants to see you in his study.
For this occasion, you will need the clothes and accessories with Elegant and Gentle tags. Use the search function to make it easier to pick the appropriate outfit.
As soon as you arrive, you will notice Lafayette arguing with Blaisdell. The King will silently nod at you once he sees you enter the study. You’ll feel a lot of tension in the air and will start getting nervous about this meeting. Blaisdell will present some numerical data to Lafayette and say it is very important to raise taxes in order to deal with the situation.
Lafayette will explain that the farmers are broke due to the bad harvests and financial crisis. According to him, raising taxes won’t solve this problem, it will only make it worse. Instead, he will propose a different solution that involves the nobles paying the taxes. He will offer to be the first one to do his part and pay the taxes to set an example.
Blaisdell will laugh at Lafayette’s proposition and remind him that this would have some serious consequences, especially if the royal family loses the support of the First and Second Estates. Lafayette will point out that losing the people’s support could turn out to be much worse.
Everyone in the room will think for a while, and you’ll notice that the atmosphere grows even heavier. Suddenly, the King will break the silence and ask Count Fersen for his opinion.
Fersen will agree with Lafayette on this. He’ll mention that some regions have even been taxed twice and asking the people for more money is not a solution. However, it won’t be easy to convince the clergy to tax the aristocrats.
The King will point out that the recent wars have emptied the country’s treasury, which is partly the reason for this whole crisis. Also, Louis XV’s lavish lifestyle didn’t help much with the whole situation. After a while, the King will ask if you have any solution to this crisis.
You will consider all of the possibilities before finally making a decision. This decision will drastically change the story, so think carefully before picking one of the options.
Tax the aristocrats
If you decide to tax the aristocrats, you will explain it is the quickest and best way to solve the problem, especially since the people will appreciate it immensely. Picking this option will unlock Stage 2-2 upon completing the stage. Louis XVI will still be worried about the First and Second Estates. He’ll ask if you know of a way to persuade them.
You will suggest following Lafayette’s example and paying your taxes first. You will also offer to publicly donate all of your jewelry as tax money. The King and everyone else in the room will be shocked to hear this from you. It’s understandable, given how Marie Antoinette used to behave before.
Lafayette will admire your determination and point out that donating all of your jewelry won’t be a wise decision. After all, as the Queen, you need to present yourself with the dignity a member of the royal family should have. Blaisdell will propose an alternative. According to him, donating half of your jewelry should be sufficient.
The King will ask if you are okay with this, and you’ll nod in approval without hesitating. Lafayette will decide to follow your footsteps and voluntarily pay his taxes as a member of the aristocracy. Fersen will quickly agree to do the same.
He will suggest letting you announce your donation publicly. That way, the people of France will know that the Queen stands with them. This might also encourage more aristocrats to volunteer to pay taxes. Lafayette will immediately offer to persuade the higher nobility to agree to the tax reform.
Blaisdell will point out that Lafayette is the perfect person to set an example. After all, he’s a war hero, which should make it easier for him to convince the other members of the aristocracy.
Still, there is a problem with the older noble families of Versailles. The King will look at you, and you’ll be faced with another decision. You can choose to volunteer to persuade them yourself or ponder silently.
Volunteer to persuade them myself
If you choose to persuade them yourself, you will smile at the King and say you’ll do all in your power to convince them to agree to the tax reform. You’ll suggest starting with the nobles who are not very strongly opinionated. Gabrielle’s family will instantly come to mind. This choice will grant you some Goodwill with Lafayette, Fersen, and Louis XVI.
Despite agreeing to your proposition, the King will be worried about you. You’ll quickly realize he knows that many of the aristocrats still consider you a foreigner from Austria and convincing those will be incredibly difficult.
Fersen will suggest inviting the nobles to a conference. Lafayette will realize he wants to present the tax reform to the aristocrats directly. According to him, this would be way too reckless. Fersen will agree it is a risky option, but sometimes you have to take risks to succeed. You’ll agree with him on this.

If you choose to ponder silently, you will think for a while, unable to come with a proper solution. After a moment of silence, Blaisdell will say you’re the best person to persuade the older aristocracy, especially since you’re willing to make a public contribution.
Fersen will point out you’re more than likely to run into difficulties. You’ll notice he’s worried about something and you’ll quickly realize why. Most members of the aristocracy still consider you an outsider from Austria, and convincing them won’t be an easy task.

Fersen will present another solution. Perhaps having the King with you could make it easier to convince them. He’ll suggest inviting them to a conference. Lafayette will point out that this may be way too reckless since you’ll present the tax reform directly to the aristocrats without consulting the clergy first.
You will agree with Fersen on this. After all, this might be a good opportunity for you to prove to them how much you’ve changed recently. Many of the ministers present will support the idea of getting you to persuade the older aristocracy. Blaisdell will continue explaining his plan. He’ll say that getting the support of the older aristocracy will make it easier to put some pressure on the clergy and successfully enforce the tax reform.
Still, you will need the support of many nobles in order for this to succeed. Blaisdell will suggest asking Gabrielle to persuade her family to agree to the tax reform.

The King will agree and grant you the authority to handle this matter. You will notice the strength and resolve in his eyes. You’ll nod respectfully, promising not to let him down.

If you decide not to tax the aristocrats, you will share your worries about them with the King. Lafayette will strongly oppose this decision saying that the true foundation of a kingdom is its people. By the looks of it, Fersen also doesn’t hold the aristocrats in high regard.
You’ll agree that the aristocrats almost never spend time with commoners and never see the hardships common people have to endure. After all, if you hadn’t accompanied the King to distribute alms, you wouldn’t know that there are plenty of people starving in Paris.
Blaisdell will point out that most of the aristocrats have a very narrow view of the world that’s entirely based on gossip and idle talk. He’ll suggest having them interact with the commoners so they could understand the pressure the King and all of the ministers are under. You will be surprised by his suggestion.
This will remind you of The Estates General of 1789, a special conference held only when there are difficult problems in affairs of state that need to be solved. In 1789, Louis XVI held the final Estates General, which led to the French Revolution. You will think for a while before making a decision.
Suggest holding a conference with the aristocrats
If you suggest holding a conference with the aristocrats, you will realize that having the conference with commoners could end up in a disaster, which is why persuading the aristocrats might be the only option. Picking this choice will unlock Stage 2-2 upon completing the stage. You will also lose some Goodwill with Blaisdell if you choose this option.
You will suggest holding a conference with the nobility and letting them know how the civilians feel. Lafayette will point out that taking this approach would mean skirting around the clergy and going directly to the nobles with the tax reform. He’ll say it is way too reckless.
Fersen, on the other hand, will say that without risk there’s no success. As for the King, he’ll want to be sure you can persuade the nobility before making a move. You will suggest having the royal family and a large number of aristocrats putting some pressure on the nobility.
The King will be surprised to hear that. You’ll notice that everyone in the room is astonished by your suggestion and also overwhelmed with curiosity. Blaisdell will be the first one to ask you about it.
You will propose donating more than half of your jewelry on behalf of the royal family as your contribution to taxes. Louis XVI will be shocked to hear that. You’ll nod your head, and you’ll notice that all eyes are looking at you in disbelief.
Lafayette will suggest having his and Fersen’s family follow your example and pay the taxes in order to pressure the other aristocrats to do the same. Fersen will agree and even propose to announce it publicly so that the people know that the royal family stands with them. This could also prove to be very beneficial to your reputation.
You will notice that everyone in the room is nodding in agreement with this idea. Lafayette will then offer to handle the higher nobility and persuade them to agree to the tax reform. Blaisdell will say that Lafayette is a war hero and has a great influence over the newer aristocrats.
The King will point out that the problem lies with the older noble families of Versailles. You’ll immediately say you’re willing to persuade them to agree to the tax reform. You’ll suggest starting with Gabrielle’s family. Louis XVI will think for a while, and you will remind him that there’s no success without risk.
In the end, the King will agree to let you handle the matter. You’ll notice a lot of strength and resolve in his eyes, and you will nod and say you won’t let him down.

If you suggest holding a conference with the commoners, you will tell the King he should let the aristocrats and the commoners interact with one another and try to find the solution to this problem. Picking this option will unlock Stage 2-9 upon completing the stage. You will also gain some Goodwill with Fersen, Lafayette, Blaisdell, and Louis XVI who will be surprised at your suggestion.
The King will say that an Estates General most likely won’t be of much use with regards to reform. Lafayette will point out that the clergy and the nobility from the First and Second Estates will outnumber the commoners at this conference, which will put the commoners at a disadvantage.
Fersen will suggest raising the number of representatives for the commoners. Blaisdell will agree, saying it will put pressure on the nobility. The King will think for a while and in the end, he’ll decide to hold an Estates General as soon as possible.
